The Ochrid Summit that should gather all Balkan presidents in Macedonia
is now called off after the news that it would be boycotted by the
Presidents of Albania, Croatia and Slovenia for not inviting the Kosovo
President, Atifete Jahjaga, and also by Greece and Bulgaria for other
reasons.
The Macedonian President, Djordje Ivanov, explained in a press conference why the summit was cancelled. Ivanov declared that the veto and boycott of the three presidents shows that there is no regional cooperation.
“This shows that the region still has deep divergences between the former Yugoslav states and Southeast European countries. This boycott followed by veto games from these states made us cancel the summit”, Ivanov declared.
“Unfortunately, the old prejudices in Balkan and the other complexes are again on full view, before the summit began”, he declared, adding that Macedonia is acting like this to not take a burden that doesn’t belong to them.
“I would never allow old Balkan prejudices to ruin the state interests within the Macedonian borders, since the price would be paid by Macedonia as a single state”, Ivanov declared.
During the organization of the summit, Serbia and Bosnia blocked the participation of Kosovo, an action that made Albania, Croatia and Slovenia cancel their participation. Greece on the other hand boycotted it since the beginning while Bulgaria warned that their representation would be of a low diplomatic profile.
The Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, explained his boycott by saying that the lack of an invitation to Kosovo is not in the spirit of regional agreements, as other countries have agreed in the region in order to get closer to the European Union.
