While the Central Election Commission discussion has now involved even
internationals, the Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission,
Lefteri Lleshi, declared during a debate with the Socialist Party legal
representative in this institution, Genc Gjoncaj, that she is not going
to resign from her post. This declaration was remarkable especially
because Mrs.Lleshi found the moment to express this feeling even without
having such a request articulated by anyone, at least not publicly.
Gjoncaj: We guarantee the Albanian citizens that we will not allow manipulations on the Election Day. The only remaining problem is the one the Democratic Party has with the Albanians and the integrity of the National Civil Registrar.
Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission, Lefteri Lleshi: Your statement came more from political grounds rather than technical ones, Mr.Gjoncaj.
Gjonçaj: I have no issues with this. The entire world says that there is a problem. You’re the only one saying that we are alright.
Lleshi: I am fulfilling the duty foreseen by the Electoral Code and I will keep doing it for as long as my moral obligation is to not resign, different from what my colleagues did, with the order coming from above.
Gjonçaj: Don’t manipulate. I didn’t ask a resignation.
This debate came after the two auditors appointed by the Central Election Commission at the Interior Ministry reported on the final voters’ list situation. The Democratic Party auditor reported only 1130 possibly doubled names in the final list. The opposition’s auditor reported 27000 doubled names, 348.000 citizens without an address, 288 voters over 100 years of age, while the oldest was 143 years old, while many other dead people are still on the list.
