One in five children in Albania is obese and malnourished. The recent
study of the Public Health Institution shows that the overweight
children make 7.7% of the children 7-10 years of age, in 110 schools,
and 19% of the children from 0 to 5 years are malnourished.
“Weight in children ranges from 21-22%, while Europe reports 24%. As regards obesity, we have a higher value compared to a similar study in 2002. 7.7% of the children are obese”, declared Jolanda Hyskja, specialist of the Public Health Institution.
Food supplied in most of the schools is not healthy and children say they prefer to consume fast foods.
“One school has reported having access to fruits, while most of the others say that children don’t have access to fruits. Most of the children have access to fast foods”, the specialist says.
This food is making a malnourished and obese generation. Fruits and vegetables that are paret of the healthy food are not consumed by our children, turning them into a problem for the future.
