Extreme drought leaves Albania’s hydropower electricity sources critically low

80% of electricity is currently being imported. The prolonged drought
has brought water levels at the Fierza at their lowest points.

The Albanian Energy Corporation (KESH) says that they are working only with natural water flow at the moment, without using reserves.

The Energy Distribution Company (OSHEE) is preparing to import energy for August, especially now that extreme heat forces citizens to consume more energy with air conditioning.

For July and August only, OSHEE paid 52 million EUR in total for energy import. The procedure is expected to be more expensive due to the unfavorable period.

Confidential sources said for Top Channel that if the drought will continue, Albania will risk total dependency on import. In these conditions, OSHEE may be forced to loan money from the annual budget.

A good help for the crisis would be a financial loan of 22.4 million EUR from the World Bank, which has not been issued yet.
