The Central Election Commission reacted today after receiving critics
from several media freedom organizations on the decision to oblige TV
outlets to broadcast electoral video materials that have been previously
edited by political parties.
The Spokesperson for this institution declared that this practice has been foreseen by the Electoral Code, and is not just a Central Election Commission decision.
“The political parties have the right to prepare their own materials to portray their electoral campaign, and send these materials to private TV outlets. This right is granted to them by the Electoral College, not the Central Election Commission. To be transparent, I’ll quote article 84.1 of the Electoral Code, which clearly states that information on electoral campaign activities, which are prepared and broadcast on news edition, based on the materials made available by the political parties, should be clearly identified, as the Central Election Commission instructs. The Central Election Commission has just implemented the Electoral Code”, the CEC Spokesperson declared.
