Zarif Farid, UN representative for Kosovo

The General Secretary of the UN, Ban Ki Mun, announced the assignment of
the diplomat Zarif Farid, from Afghanistan, as the new special
representative of the UN for Kosovo, and also as the head of the UN
Mission in the country.

Zarif is replacing the Italian Lamberto Zannieri, who led the UN Mission until this June.

UN declared through a press release that Zarif brings with him the wide experience of the UN and of international diplomatic relations, after serving in different positions inside and outside Afghanistan, including the role of Afghanistan representative in the UN from 1981 to 1987.

Zarif joined the UN in 1993 and has served at its New York headquarters and also in its political, humanitarian and peacekeeping missions in Eritrea, Liberia, South Africa, Iraq and Sudan.
