Balkan was one again a discussion topic at the US Senate. In a special
session held for the region, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State,
Hoyt Brian Yee,a declared that Western Balkan is facing the most
serious challenges since 1990.

Senators and experts made appeals in the session for USA to continue with their commitment in Balkan, in order to confront the Russian influence, avoid escalations and focus on reforms and stability.

Yee said that if internal and external threats are not met with an answer, they could bring serious consequences to Europe and the USA. He mentioned some of the progresses that were reached through American support, including the Judiciary Reform in Albania.

“With ours and with Eu’s commitments, we have had real successes during the past month. Montenegro entered NATO, Macedonian leaders worked together for a new government, and the Albanian opposition ended boycott of the June 25th elections. Serbia is expected to open two new chapters with the European Union”, Hoyt Brian Yee said.

The Republican Chairman of the Commission, Ron Johnson, insisted that the US leadership is necessary in Southeastern Europe. He added that a stable Balkan is USA’s best interest.

The Vice Chairman of the panel, Democrat Chris Murphy, said that there are three important challenges for America in Balkan: “Russian influence, corruption stopping economic progress and radicalization of youth.
