The Albanian Interior Minister, Fatmir Xhafaj, declared in a press release that he was not giving explanations for the accusations of the opposition, but for the public and international partners.
Xhafaj reminded that in 2002, when the government was led by Pandeli Majko and his brother had been sentenced in Italy, Xhafaj had offered his resignation as Minister of Tourism, but it had nto been accepted.
He said that his brother never avoided investigation, and the sentence has been in effect for years. “No action of mine has given him immunity or favours for not allowing the execution of the verdict. As Prime Minister and Public Functionary I have never withdrawn from the idea that my brother should not serve that sentence for what he did, a sentence that is way more severe than the charges”, Xhafaj declared.
By deciding to hand himself over to the Italian authorities, he said that Agron Xhafaj didn’t allow him to test himself as Interior Minister.
“I didn’t encourage him to do it, but he didn’t give me the possibility to test me as Interior Minister if his extradition would have been required”, Xhafaj said.
The Interior Minister said that the audio recording claimed by the Democratic Party was a manipulation. He asked the Prosecution to investigate it the soonest possible, adding that this is a blackmail from the opposition.
“It is a manipulation, even made very badly. If it was not the opposition who did it, but they fell victim, they show what level of evil this opposition produces. Their intimate interests have fallen to the same level of criminal gangs within the rotten justice system. They are ready to cooperate with the devil only for this government to end the soonest possible. I guarantee that I had left this office, whatever has been done by me and by my colleagues will never be ruined. The Special Prosecution Against Corruption and the National Bureau of Investigation will start operating and crime will lose terrain. No one can stop me from achieving my goals”, Xhafaj said.
As for the falsification of the Criminal Code, Xhafaj said that it is the most ridiculous accusation, the most absurd. “I defend it as an article that respects the Constitution, a law that is useful for the Albanian citizens. It is an international standard. We did not invent it”, Xhafaj said.
