WT: “Balkan destabilization affects Europe and the USA”

A Washington Times article by Luke Coffey describes Balkan tensions as
problematic for the security of Europe and of America too, despite the
continental distance.

The article says that the region has constantly been a source of conflicts which have also brought in US troops.

“This is one of the reasons why America has invested billions in assistance. Some areas of the region has also attracted Islamic extremism, while Russia is always present, trying to undermine American interests”, the article says.

According to Coffey, the situation in Macedonia should be a wake up call for US lawmakers. While Albania would turn into a very dangerous source, in case of a perfect storm. “As a NATO member, its position has more weight and the regional destabilization would be greater”, the article notes.

If things go bad, Russia is always ready to pretend they are helping to sort things out. “Washington must absolutely be more attentive to what is happening in Balkan, or the massive investments after the Cold War may go in vain”.
