Women in typically men professions

Alma Marku has been working as a carpenter for the past 12 years. However, being a woman in a men’s profession has had its advantages.

“I was in Greece and I thought to try another profession. I purchased the machinery and I returned to Albania. It was hard at first, but later I started having more work because I was a woman and I could pay more attention to furniture details”, she said.

“At first when I went to buy materials people would be surprised seeing a woman. Clients were also hard to get convinced to trust me the job”, she says.

Donika Verdho, in Divjaka, used to drive a tractor during the communist cooperatives. Today she is adopting by becoming a successful farmer.

“Agriculture is difficult for women, but we have to adopt. I am happy to work every day with my husband”, she said.

Even this day they are working until dawn.

“My husband bought me golden earrings today”, she says with pride.
