Why free citizenship cannot be realized

The declaration of the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, who
declared that the Albanian government will give citizenship without any
condition to every Albanian, wherever he might be, falls against the
national strategy and returns back the integration processes.

The first threat is that of the visa liberalization, says Ditmir Bushati, Chairman of the Commission of Integration. The former Foreign Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, says that EU doesn’t welcome the export of nationalism in Brussels.

“The Albanians have been watched very closely even before they travelled to the Schengen area. This means changing the current agreement, and for this is needed the EU approval. If Albania acts differently, this could endanger the visa free travel regime”, Bushati declared.

“EU has nationalistic problems with countries like Hungary, and since they cannot remove them, at least they don’t want to be closer with countries that have problems of this nature”, Mustafaj declared.

According to Mustafaj and Bushati, this is anti-national, because it would cause ethnic cleansing of the areas populated by Albanians.

Mustafaj added that this is something that has not been done by Greece and Macedonia, and not because they are less nationalistic than Albania, but because this is not a smart national act.

“The areas populated by Albanians, such as Presheva, Plava and Gucia could have their population moving away. This project would serve to ethnic cleansing”, Mustafaj declared.

“Imagine of Greece or Serbia removes double nationality, what will happen with the Albanians in Presheva and Macedonia? They would be the collateral damage of this initiative”, Bushati underlined.

If this draft-law doesn’t serve to the Albanian factor, what’s the interest of such an initiative?

“We have anachronic nationalism which is a burned card, because Berisha has tried it even before and without success. This is an effort to remove the attention from the deep problems that Albania has today”, Bushati declared.

“We can only guess why Berisha is doing this, but this is a worthless project for the Albanians”, Mustafaj declared.

The chairman of the Integration Commission and former Foreign Minister declared that the challenge of all Albanians is to make their countries more democratic and an equal co-existence in the region, and join under the EU integration project.
