Why Albanians prefer western names for their children
18/01/2019 21:57
Amelia for girls and Noel for boys, these were the most used names for newborns in Tirana during the last year.
INSTAT data show that the top 20 names used for children don’t have any original Albanian name among them.
Anthropologist Aleksander Dhima says that the main focus now is to use very short names, rather than longer ones, and that there is a trend.
The same thing is taking place in Kosovo, where people used to use very Albanian names up to a few decades ago.
Globalism is one of the main reasons, with many Albanians being affected by Western media, music and culture, and because national identity no longer appeals to them as it used to in the past.
