Former British Prime Minister David Cameron, now Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Rishi Sunak’s government, is expected to visit Tirana.

Diplomatic sources in London and Tirana told Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu that this visit of Lord Cameron is expected to take place tomorrow, May 22.

The focus of the visit is said to be not any specific issue, but the continuation of British support for Albania.

A few days ago albanian PM Rama had a telephone conversation with his counterpart Rishi Sunak, under pressure from public opinion and by own within the Conservative Party for the  illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel with dinghies.

Preparations have started in the capital, while a poster has been placed in “Mother Teresa” square that reads “Welcome Lord Cameron”.

The Prime Minister’s Office announces that the head of government Edi Rama and Secretary Cameron will hold a press conference at 12:50 at the Cod library.

In Tirana, Lord Cameron is expected to evaluate the coordination with the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the prevention of illegal immigration and the cooperation of SPAK with the NCA against organized crime.

In 2022, 13,000 Albanians arrived in Britain by dinghy, this figure reportedly dropped by 90% during 2023, where only 900 Albanians arrived by dinghy.

Top Channel’s Muhamed Veliu says that “so that this visit does not remain only in the context of thanks and appreciation, it is a good opportunity for the Albanian Government to insist on increasing visas for seasonal workers and work visas for Albanians”.
