It was no surprise when the High Inspectorate of Wealth Declaration and Control made the annual random selection, picking the names of 188 officials whose wealth will be investigated by this inspectorate.

Before the random selection, OSCE ambassador for Tirana, Eugen Wollfarth, underlined that the war against corruption is one of the priorities of the OSCE presence in Albania.

“Some reports, including the most recent one that was released by the European Commission, show what we all know, that corruption remains a main problem in many sectors, regardless of the several measures that have been undertaken by the government. These elections enable voters to rise against corruption without tolerance. For this I invite all citizens to abandon the Albanian tradition of blind loyalty to parties.
Instead of this, you should use May 8th as a possibility to cast your vote for making local candidates show a stronger engagement towards transparency and other principles of good governance”, Wollfarth said.

The computer has randomly chosen from the list with 4692 names the officials that will put their declared wealth under the eye of the High Inspectorate of Wealth Declaration and Control.

The names were mainly picked from the Tax Department and Customs. 44 other persons come from the Prosecution Office and 22 others from the judicial system. The computer did not randomly select any minister or party leader, except of the deputies Gjokë Jaku, Edi Paloka, Luan Skuqi and Aldo Bumçi from the Democratic Party; Qemal Minxhozi, Ermonela Felaj and Tom Doshi from the Socialist Party.

Other names were those of Dëshira Subashi, member of the Central Election Commission, Gjergj Bojaxhi, former director of the Construction Inspectorate and Albanian Energy Corporation, and Lindita Nikolla, candidate for the Tirana Municipality Unit no.1. Another name that attracted the attention was Shemsi Premçi, high commander of the Rapid Intervention Forces, recently mentioned by the media for the conflict with the Vice Minister of Public Order, Avenir Peka, regarding some incidents in Bathore.
