The World Bank Director for South-Eastern Europe, Jane Armitage,
considered their 20 years of presence in Albania as a success story.
During a press conference for the 20th anniversary, Mrs. Armitage declared that Albania has changed a lot, with the help of the bank.
“In my five years as director of the World Bank for South-Eastern Europe, I have had the chance to travel in every part of this country. I have seen schools, hospitals, irrigation system, thermo centrals, markets and many other works financed by our projects. I am a personal witness of the extraordinary changes that this country has had only in five years”, Armitage declared.
“For 20 years, this country has seen at the World Bank the excellent partner. The first words that come from the heart are the deep gratitude and estimation”, Prime Minister Berisha declared before surprising the guests by saying that the donators were also to blame for the Ponzi schemes of 1997.
“Because of the crisis, the Bank has decided to increase the funds for Albania and is currently negotiating with the government for a big loan package that will be used in development projects and for keeping the cost under control.
“We have agreed to double the plan for the loans in Albania. We had planned to give 200-250 million USD for the next four years. Now we have decided to give double of this, which will be used for increasing competitiveness and support the economic growth”, Armitage underlined.
The World Bank is the biggest donator in Albania by financing the economy with soft loans.
