The Parliamentary Commission of Productive Activities, Trade and
Environment, passed only with the votes of the majority the law amends
for the waste import, which foresee halting the import of foreign
recyclable waste materials. The Alliance Against Waste Import, which lobbied
against this import, has greeted the decision.
“We closed a window that was aiming to bring dangerous materials to the Albanian citizens and our country, due to the lack of administrative capacities. There was also a shift of the attention from recycling foreign waste to recycling ours”, declared Blendi Kajsiu.
The Director of Policies at the Ministry of Environment, Pellumb Abeshi, declared that the Ministry will take all measures to allow the division of waste materials in the sources, starting with public institutions.
“The local government has an undisputable role, because it is a generator of waste and manager of the territory. They haven’t done enough. The Ministry will propose necessary measures for waste management at the Council of Ministers”, Abeshi declared.
The Association of Recyclers asked a quick start of waste management procedures, so that this industry could guarantee the raw materials from our country.
“There are two recycling requests: one is related to the integrated management throughout the country, and the other is the implementation of a legislation according to the European Union standards, where we aim to adhere”, declared Vullnet Haka from the recyclers association.
The Chairman of the Commission, Eduard Shalsi, emphasized that other urgent measures need to be taken for the waste management, so that this law doesn’t remain only on paper, but that it can help cleaning our country from waste, helping this way the recycling business development.
“As Chairman of the commission, I inform you that we will inspect and monitor carefully, and will demand answers for the commitments. We cannot accept an Albania like this in 2013”, Shalsi declared.
