Despite the debate for the contribution in the Anti-Fascist National
Liberation war, there were three forces in Albania that were part of
that battle: the Communists, the Legality and the Front.
Although the three ideologies are represented today with political parties, none of them were part of the celebrations for commemorating the May fifth.
The representatives of the Communist Party were not allowed due to their banners and photos of Enver Hoxha, the former Albanian communist dictator. While the Legality and the Front refuse to be part of these celebrations.
The Legality Party even suggests to change the Martyrs’ Day, since May 5st is the day when a communist was killed, and he doesn’t represent everyone.
“Even the title should not be ‘Martyr of the National Liberation War’, but just ‘Nation’s Martyr’. We join with all martyrs who have fought against invaders, but communists killed 4000-6000 Albanians”, Alimadhi declared.
The same report was released by the National Front.
“Certainly that martyrs must be honored, but which ones? Those who are being honored today replaced the real heroes, the ones who fought for uniting the country and that’s why we don’t have to join them”, declared Sulejman gjana, leader of the National Front Party.
Regardless on their stance about the war, all of those who claim to have inherited the ideologies of the forces who fought in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation war say that history needs to be reviewed.
Meanwhi,e the main political forces in our country, although divided, come together for commemorating the nation’s martyrs.
