The Tirana Municipality is not allowing the Roma people to collect
plastic bottles and beverage cans in the rubbish bins of the city, by
seizing their carts and by destroying a collection center.
The revolted Romaare demanding their carts back and to be allowed to keep collecting cans, since they have no other employment chances.
“I’ve been working with this for 20 years. We are nine people in my family. We have no social assistance and the Municipality comes and takes my cart and pressures me”, one of them reports.
“They come and beat us, take our money away. I have eight children”, another one says.
“They should stop those who make big dirty business, not us in the rubbish bins”, another one says.
The Roma were supported by the Socialist Municipality Councilors, Gent Gazheli and Florian Pullazi, who say that the involvement of the Roma in this activity is a project of the foreing embassies in the Korca and Tirana Municipalities, which has started three years ago, in order to integrate them in the social life.
Dalipi accuses the Municipality of using mafia style plans for establishing a monopoly for collecting and processing waste materials.
“More than 30.000 people will have nothing to eat. We have taken the necessary steps. We were at the Ombudsman and updated the embassies, because the fate of the Roma people is one of the 12 EU recommendations. A monopoly is being built for not allowing them to secure minimal revenues and for taking the business on their own hands”, Dalipi told to the Roma.
