Vucic wants Kosovo partition, Medvegja could be left out the “Valley”

Debates are high in Kosovo together with midsummer temperatures, while the most mentioned words are division, territorial exchange or border correction.

President Hashim Thaci talks about border correction and unification of Presheva with Kosovo, and intends to do all this peacefully, while Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj says the borders were determined by war and only war can change them. Meanwhile, the opposition has its own stance. LDK says it will seek an interpretation by the constitutional court for Thaci’s reckless words.

But on the other side of the border Serbian President Alexander Vucic says openly that he prefers the partition of Kosovo along ethnic lines.

“I support the division of Kosovo, this is my policy,” Vucic told local N1 television on Thursday. “It is not good to have a territory that no one knows how to handle or who always serves as a source of potential conflict”. Obviously, Belgrade would like to have North Mitrovica with a Serb majority, while Thaci talks about joining Kosovo with the Albanian majority in Presevo Valley.

The local leaders of Presheva have been the ones who have clearly articulated their wishes, but as they talk about joining, there is a catch here too. The Valley consists of the municipalities of Bujanovci, Presheva and Medvegja, with the latter being run by Serbs, and in case of border correction, it could be left out.

According to the mayor of Bujanovci, Shaip Kamberi, Serbs have carried out ethnic cleansing in Medvegja and as a result have taken over the municipality. But a partial solution to the valley, he says, would bring a humanitarian tragedy. According to Kamberi, Medvegja is part of the ethnic Albanian trunk and an inseparable part of the Valley.
