The village of Smollik, in the Municipality of Bulqiza in northeastern Albania, does not have a proper educational building.

This village of 50 families has now only 6 students, who study in this wooden building, in scandalous conditions. This building is located among the trees, in a place far from the village and when the children walk to the school they are also endangered by wild animals. The path that these children take every day is even worse than a goat’s.

Investigative programming Fiks Fare traveled to the remote village, where residents complain about the conditions in which the school building is located as well as the path they have to take to get there.

The building modified as a school is out of all conditions, without water, without electricity, without a toilet. Parts of the collapsed walls have been tried to be repaired with boards. The road leading to the building passes through the forest, which makes it dangerous for wild animals. To cover this distance, the children have to walk 30 minutes every day.

Fiks Fare inquired at the Bulqiza Municipality, where responsable Mevlud Karaj, said that together with the administrator have tried to find a building closer to the village to turn it into a school, but added that the rents are too high.

“We cannot pay such a large amount as there are established rules for rents. We are trying to find a solution, but we cannot build a toilet there because we cannot transport the material base, as there is no road either,” says Karaj.
