New images emerge after the Greek newspaper, “To Vima”, published photos
from the last minutes of Ilia Kareli, the Albanian prisoner who killed a
Greek guard after he was not allowed to meet his mother, and then died
in the Nigrita prison from internal injuries caused by severe beatings.
This time, the newspaper “Kathimerini” published a 5-minute-video taken from four different prison cameras, showing Kareli arriving in the prison and entering the room where he was tortured before being closed in his cell.
10 prison guards are seen waiting for Kareli’s arrival. The prison director orders them to take pictures of him. From these pictures it can be seen that Kareli already has some hematomas in his body and head, already caused in the Malandrino prison.
Then the video shows all prison guards, even those who were not on duty but who were called on their cellphones. Some of them enter the room called “the refrigerator”, while the director is seen leaving the area.
The guards beat Kareli with punches, kicks and a thick rope. Then, one of the prison guards seems to not agree with what his colleagues are doing.
In the meantime, someone prepares the cell where Kareli will be taken. The prison director comes after 35 minutes and is seen talking to his dependants by showing them the torture room.
According to their declarations, at this moment he has understood that the prisoner has been tortured, and tells his guards that whoever will hit him now, will have to admit what he did.
Two minutes later he is seen having a tense conversation with one of the prison guards, and then he leaves.
Kareli’s cell is ready two hours later, and he is seen not being able to stand on his feet. Dinner was brought to him at 19:25, and four hours later two guards notice that he is not moving anymore. The ambulance comes later and the doctor announces his death.
