“Vetting” draft law passed in principle

The law for verifying the integrity of judges and prosecutors was voted
in principle at the Special Commission of the Justice Reform. This is
the most important law, which spurred most debates between opposing
parties. The law passed only with the votes of the majority. The
opposition abstained.

“The opposition insisted in their stance and didn’t make any accusation about constitutional violations by any law. The opposition was not part of the voting, since they were present in the commission”, said the Socialist representative at the Commission, Pandeli Majko.

Majko added that the Socialists passed all the remarks made by the Democratic Party and that had received approval by international missions, such as OPDAT from the USA and EURALIUS from the EU.

But the representative of the Democratic Party, Oerd Bylykbashi, said the law goes against the Constitutional amends that passed with consensus on July 22nd. He said that the opposition will oppose this law by suggesting a hearing at the Constitutional Court.

“This draft law is anti-constitutional and has no chances against the constitutionality test. We need to take other legislative steps for this law. This law today is against the constitution”, Bylykbashi declared.

Despite this, the Conference of Chairmen is expected to meet at 18:00 to establish the extraordinary session for voting the law.
