The first 30 families, who fulfilled the criteria to profit from social housing, were given today the keys to their new apartments offered by Tirana Municipality. The total number of those who will profit from the project mounts to 380 families, but Mayor Erion Veliaj said this was not enough to solve the problem.

He will therefore ask construction companies to lower prices for apartments remained unsold, heaving in mind a scheme to oblige them to do so. “Housing needs in Tirana is bigger than this. I have appealed to the Constructors Association; they keep the apartments empty and do not lower prices. Even though we are a free market economy and the state cannot dictate prices, we can change the laws ordering unsold apartments owners to pay the property tax”, Veliaj said, adding that by maintaining these high prices they cannot ask for any more construction permits.

In the first lucky families was that of Albanian singer, Tonin Tërshana, who thanked authorities for the contribution adding he was waiting 20 years for this moment.
