The European Committee of the Regions held its annual meeting, this time in Tirana, focusing on Western Balkan as a great way for exchanging ideas and benefiting from projects.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, attended the event in presence of local government representatives and EU experts.
Veliaj expressed the need for the EU to directly support local governments that have the ability to perform well. “One of the discussions that we had with the EU colleagues, was that it is the right time for the European Commission to directly support the municipalities which have the ability to perform well and push forward with this cause. I and the Mayor of Shkoder, we both lead associations of municipalities. And we both can confirm that we need more schools, kindergartens, green spaces, etc. And this is one of the reasons why we want the European Commission to see municipalities as a priority and as partners in the implementation”, Veliaj said.
The Mayor added that beyond political convictions, everyone is interested to have functional and livable cities.
