After three weeks, the protest of the van drivers who transport
passengers between Albanian cities, have blocked the entrances of the
city.
200 vans from Elbasan, Pogradec, Korce and Erseka were not allowed by the police to enter the Albanian capital and protest in front of the Prime Minister’s office, the Ministry of Transports and the Interior Ministry. In sign of protest, the van owners have blocked the road for three hours by sitting on the ground.
The Special Intervention Forces have arrived on the scene and tried to unblock the road.
Democratic Party Parliament Members rushed to the scene and started managing the situation during the confrontations with the police.
The situation in the entrance of Tirana was calmer. Democratic Party Parliament Members were waiting for them at the “Zogu I Zi area”, and then they gathered at the “Asllan Rusi” Sport Palace, and asked to go in front of the Prime Minister’s office with their vehicles.
They blocked the road for 90 minutes, causing a very long queue of vehicles that entered the city.
The situation became tense several times here, especially after the arrival of the Special Forces. The police officers negotiated with the van drivers to open at least one side of the road for not blocking the circulation, but the opposition Parliament Members encouraged them for the contrary.
The situation was unblocked after they agreed to go to the Prime Minister’s office on foot, by leaving their vehicles at the city entrance.
Political and economic requests during the march on the boulevard
The protest of the van drivers started at 13:00 in front of the Prime Ministry. During their speech, some of the protesters asked the government to organize a meeting with a group of representatives and to repeal the law that makes them turn empty.
But most of the protesters launched strong political messages, making appeals for overthrowing the government.
The employees who have been discharged from the public administration recently joined the van drivers, one day after holding their own protest at the Parliament.
