On the verge of the local elections and while the US Embassy has asked a
list of incriminated Parliament Members, the US Deputy Ambassador,
Henri Jardin, declared in a meeting with the excellency students that
youth should be the one fighting for democracy.
“What I would encourage is for people to think about what they want. Finding possibilities to take the people’s opinions and address questions to the candidates: how will you bring jobs in my area? How will be life safer? How will be the education? This is important, and they must answer if they plan to improve the situation. The decriminalization issue is also important. You would want clean candidates and without problems with the crime. When there is less criminality and more solved cases, you understand that there is a healthier climate. If there are only accusations and nothing more is done, that is not good. Democracy is something you must fight for. The candidate is important for the democracy and the education of the people’s vote is the only chance for democracy”, Jardin declared.
Some of the students asked the Ambassador’s opinion regarding the economic situation in our country.
“You have had problems with extreme communism and you have passed them. Improving the life of an individual is the basics of what you must fight today. You must fight demagogy, because there are alternatives today. I feel sad when I see Albanians leave. Albanai is a small country where it is difficult to have economy grow, but talented people can make it a better place to live”, Jardin declared.
The US diplomat underlined that Albania has made steps ahead, but there are still bigger challenges related to the fight against corruption and respecting the human rights.
