The United States expressed their concern regarding the increasing
tension in Eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian protesters took control of
local government buildings in three eastern cities: Donetsk, Luhansk
and Kharkiv.
The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, told his Russian homologue during a phone call conversation that every effort of Russia to destabilize Ukraine will have huge consequences.
They talked about the opportunity of direct talks in the next 10 days. Protesters declared Donetsk a “Popular Republic” this Monday and asked a referendum on May 11th. The US Department of State Spokesperson, Jen Psaki, declared that Kerry appealed Russia to publicly condemn the acts of provocative separatists in Ukraine.
The US Chief Diplomat underlined that the events in eastern Ukraine are not spontaneous. Sergei Lavrov denied that Russia is destabilizing Ukraine and accused the west of increasing tensions without foundations.
He also warned Ukrainian authorities to not use violence against pro-Russian protesters. The Russian Foreign Ministry is following the developments in Eastern Ukraine very attentively, especially in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv. The President of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov, declared that this is the second phase of Russia’s efforts to divide the country and destabilize Ukraine, in order to bring the government down and hamper the planned elections.
He cancelled the visit in Lithuania to respond to the new situation. Although the developments in Donetsk look similar to those in Crimea, there are Ukrainians in Donetsk and they support a united country. NATO stopped Russian diplomats this Monday from entering their headquarters in Brussels.
