The US State Secretary, Rex Tillerson, tried once again to make it clear to Europe that the USA are very committed to work for increasing security in the old continent, especially as regards the threats coming from Russia.

Tillerson, who will visit several European capitals during the next week, said that the USA would be the first one to respond to any attack made against a European ally, based on article 5 of the NATO agreement, which foresees mutual defense.

However, he reminded European countries that they should take more responsibility for their security challenges. He admitted that many of them have increased their defense spending, including Albania. Tillerson also addressed Western Balkan in his speech.

“We tell Balkan countries to abandon old enmities, in order to make peace permanent. You have the chance to lead a new course of the history. Ethnic differences between countries should not turn into fronts of conflicts. The USA and the world want to see a new generation of Serbs, Croats, Albanians, Bosnians, Kosovars and others, to forgive what happened in the past, although they will never be able to forget”, Tillerson said.

He used harsher speech against Moscow, criticizing especially their military interventions in Georgia and Ukraine, and for meddling with the European elections and policies.
