Different from the declaration of the Spokesperson for the EU High
Representative, who focused on the provoking actions, the US State
Department was more direct and said that in Belgrade it was violence
that interrupted the match.
The US State Department, Jen Psaki, was asked about what happened in Belgrade.
Serbia accused Albania about what happened, and considered the Albanian banner an intentional political provocation, which caused the stopping of the game.
Jen Psaki: “It is very unfortunate that this football match was interrupted by violence. Sports have a big potential to unite people even beyond borders. When violence and the lack of tolerance violate this potential, it is disappointing for everyone, sportsmen, spectators, fans and their countries. The US Embassy certainly did not have any role in anything that happened”.
The spokesperson of Psaki was asked of the US State Department had contacted with the Serbian and Albanian sides about this, and she said that there has been no contact, for what she has been informed.
