US State Department report on Albania’s business climate spurs debates between majority and opposition

The US State Department report about business climate has caused political debates in Albania.

For the opposition leader, Lulzim Basha, the report proved the accusations of the opposition against Edi Rama’s government.

“The report has negative notes for every aspect of the business climate. What proves the criminal level of the Rama government in the economy, is the confirmation that foreign investors are being blackmailed to work with his clients or there will be no chance for them to realize the investment”, Basha declared.

According to the US State Department report, Albania remains a difficult country for foreign investors, who keep reporting corruption especially in the judiciary system, and lack of transparency in public procurements.

The Minister of Finances, Arben Ahmetaj, responded: “Those who keep attempting to become an obstacle to the judicial reform and the vetting process should give up because this government has initiated and is supporting the implementation of the judicial reform, which is the main thing mentioned in the report”, Ahmetaj declared.

But for the DP, the US State Department is saying that the competition was limited and there are no clear analyses about the profit costs.

“The only economic policy that Rama has followed in these five years was stealing citizens’ taxes by supplying his clients with abusive contracts”, the DP leader declared.

Ahmetaj responded by saying that the most problematic concession agreements are those signed by the former Democratic Party government.

“The number of concessions made until 2013 is 178. We have made only 39. The PPP concept is a way of having private operators build roads immediately, which are necessary, and that the government cannot build right away. This makes us build them earlier”, said the Minister of Economy.
