A delegation of US Congressmen led by the Chairman of Legal Matters Committee, Bob Goodlatte, arrived in Tirana on an official visit.

The congressmen met with outgoing President Bujar Nishani, and newly voted President Ilir Meta.

The press office of President Nishani stated that the congressmen discussed the current political situation, the importance of the judiciary reform, the rule of law, concerns about cannabis, organized crime and the military and defense budget. The 7 US congressmen valued the institutional role of President Nishani for intermediating dialogue between the two political parties.

In their meeting with Ilir Meta, the US congressmen discussed about the next parliamentary elections, the electoral reform, the implementation of the judiciary reform, increasing the defense budget as part of the NATO accession, and improving the rule of law.  They also discussed about measures that need to be taken against organized crime and drug cultivation.

The Parliament Speaker declared that despite the current challenges, Albania remains committed to the Euro-Atlantic agenda.

The delegation of the US Congress was made of congressmen Bob Goodlatte, Steve King, Dave Trott, Matt Gaetz, Peter DeFazio, David N. Cicilline, who were accompanied by the US Ambassador to Tirana, Donald Lu.

The delegation also met with the Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, who informed them about the progress of reforms in the country, mainly the judiciary one. They also met with the Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, a few days before the US Deputy Assistant State Secretary Hoyt Brian Yee arrives in Tirana to bring a final message from Washington regarding the political stalemate in the country.
