The US Ambassador to Benlgrade, Kyle Scott, said for Radio Free Europe
that Serbia is getting closer to EU than to Russia, despite voices
claiming the opposite.
“Serbia has desired to be neutral from the military point of view, and we respect this. But on the other hand, they are showing interest to be part of the EU integration, a process which we support without hesitation. We believe it is for the best of Serbia and of the entire region”, the Ambassador said.
The protests that erupted in Serbia against newly elected President Vucic are described by Scott as a healthy element of an energetic democracy.
Vucic received 55% of the presidential votes, confirming his domination which may mostly be due to his equal balancing between Russia and Europe.
Although the President is mostly a ceremonial post, Vucic is expected to appoint one of his allies as Prime Minister and move the President’s role to an office from where he will be able to control the political life of the 7.2 million country.
