The United States of America chose to give a strong public message to former Democratic leader Sali Berisha by declaring him non grata and will not amnesty him even when he is preparing to run for the leadership of the Democratic Party.
Ambassador Yuri Kim took care to underline that today in the comments for the media after the meeting she had with Enkelejd Alibeaj, the acting chairman of the Albanian opposition PD, recognized by the USA.
Kim said: “Good discussion today with the acting chairman of the Democratic Party and head of the parliamentary group Enkelejd Alibeaj. The US has had a strong and special relationship with the DP since its inception.
“The US and Albania have a lot of work to do to keep Albania on the path to EU membership. Let us then move forward together, not backwards.”
But the ambassador’s public message greatly revolted the supporters of Sali Berisha’s democrat faction.
Democrat MP Edi Paloka commented on the meeting as ‘shameful’, calling the American diplomat ‘instigator of the disruption of the opposition’.
Paloka said: “This lady is the one who congratulated Rama on the ‘historic victory’ before the completion of the election process on April 25, and has come out openly in support of the most corrupt government in the region, as described by their own US State Department.
“Today she has undertaken a final act, always serving the same purpose. The ambassador, arrogantly, shows that not only does she not respect the Vienna Convention, but she also does not recognize the decisions of the Albanian courts, although she talks all the time about justice. You lady can meet anyone you want, but you cannot decide over the Albanian courts and especially on the free will of the Albanian democrats! “.
Enkelejd Alibeaj decided not to comment, but was satisfied with the photo shot next to Ambassador Yuri Kim, calm and smiling.
