No diplomat had ever expressed his views as openly as the US Ambassador.
Experiencing the Albanian politics from a close view is the worst part
of an Ambassador’s work.
Ambassador Lu has been involved intensively for an year, so that Albanian politicians can find consensus to vote the justice reform. But without success. He writes that every child knows that when parties don’t agree for a matter, such as the “reserved spots”, they need to sit and find a compromise. For this point, Donald Lu has made the name of the person who did not find compromise.
“It is true that Mr.Rama and Mr.Basha tried to do this on June 6th. They failed to reach an agreement. Three times since May 4th. The USA and the EU offered reasonable compromise. The majority accepted them but Mr.Basha always found something to refuse”, Donald Lu writes.
When the US Ambassador held this stance a few weeks ago, the Democrats published the e-mail of US experts to show that the reserved spots are an American proposition and that the opposition will not accept anything less than what has been offered by Venice.
“I think that the Albanian people is tired with the games of politicians. If the government and the opposition want to reach an agreement, we have offered three compromise solution that completely fulfill paragraphs 61 and 88 of the Final Opinion of the Venice Commission. The politicians don’t have to take our suggestions, but they need to find compromise”.
After being an intermediating party for so long, the US Ambassador admits that there is another option. He appeals every MP for this:
“Maybe the leaders of Albanian political parties are afraid of this reform and they are not ready to make any agreement. I appeal the individual members of the Parliament to take their own responsibility and vote in favor of this reform. The voting is planned for July 21st. It is the time to decide”.
The US Ambassador has always defended the justice reform as an instrument for the future of the country. For this reason he appeals the Albanian youth to be active and tell politicians that the youth wants this reform.
“Write a letter. Post on social networks. Talk to your friends. The vote of July 21st will decide the orientation of our country. Tell your leaders that you want to grow up in a country that is free from corrupted judges and prosecutors. Tell them that you want Albania to be a democracy where your voices will be heard and where you will be treated equally and with respect”, the letter concludes.
