US Ambassador: Act now!

The society must not stay quiet and wait for politics to resolve its
problems. People must raise their voice for the fate of their country.

“Act Now!”, this is the invitation that the US Ambassador made to the Albanians through a campaign that was announced in Tirana, in presence of the most important civil society, whose space, according to him, has shrank considerably in the recent years.

“Some of you might remember how we met a visitor from Washington a few time ago. We were impressed by a sentence from one of you that the space of the civil society has shrunk considerably. This impressed both of us, because the answer is not by creating a government office that controls the civil society. The answer is to give more space not only to the civil society, but also to the individuals, the way how we answer to the citizens’ concerns and hear what they have to say”, Arvizu declared.

In presence of hundreds of participants from the civil society, the US Ambassador listed some of the most important issues that are burdening the Albanians and for which the citizens should not be silent.

“I have a question. Why have there been obstacles with the waste referendum? Why the Central Election Commission has not given an answer, although the request has been signed from more than 50.000 citizens? Let us stop for a little bit at this initiative, ‘Act Now!’. This is for every citizen of Albania, for the change that we want, for what can be found in every corner of this blessed country, that was found in the sadness of the students and professors of the Aleksander Xhuvani University, in Elbasan, when a bus packed with students fell of a cliff in a very dangerous road of Himara; it was found in the sadness of a family in Dukagjin, where a 17-year-old was made victim of a senseless violence, which shouldn’t have a place in 21st century Albania. It can be found at the Saranda citizens, whose town lost its grace and turned into a concrete canyon. It can be found in Gjirokaster, where the citizens see how the historical houses are crumbled. It can be found in Tirana, where the traffic is dangerous for the pedestrians and drivers. Act now!”, Arvizu declared.

Although 22 years have passed after the communist regime, the Albanians have not reached their dream yet. The US Ambassador, Aleksander Arvizu, expressed his support to all Albanians that demand their rights.

Important figures of our country, like Ismail Kadare and Alfred Mojsiu, have signed this initiative symbolically.

The US Ambassador, accompanied by the Mayor of Tirana, Lulzim Basha, visited a fair organized by the Civil Society, which are active in many areas. The volunteer activity, the environment, civil education, reaction against drugs and human rights were the areas presented by the organizations and where they invited the citizens to be part of.
