Urgent solution for AMA and RTSH

The Audiovisual Media Authority has been in a stalemate for a long time,
due to the many vacancies in its main council. Now it might turn
completely unfunctional due to the absence of the opposition in
Parliament, and the inability to appoint the new members and the new
chairman.

To make way for a solution, the vice-chairman of the media Authority, Alfred Peza, asked the support of international institutions and appealed the opposition to return to the commission for doing their legal duty, which is to appoint the new Chairman of the AMA and the members of the Directing Council of the Albanian Public Television.

“The current law defines the same responsibilities for the majority and the opposition. We appeal the government to come at the commission and unblock this situation for turning their work to normality”, declared vice chairman Alfred Peza.

In a letter sent by the majority to the opposition, MP Mimoza Hafizi mentions the need to appoint the members of the AMA, which now has only three out of seven, and also the members of the Directing Board of the Albanian Public Television.

“The stalemate of AMA has blocked the digitalization procedure of Radio and TV operators. Albania has the obligation to complete the digitalization process by June 17th 2015. This deadline was given by the International Telecommunication Union through an agreement ratified by Albania. One of the first countries that applied digital TV for its citizens, might turn into the last country in Europe that finalizes it”, Hafizi declared.

“Their duty is to respect the law they passed. They should be present and unblock the situation”, declared MP Musa Ulqini.

“We leave two days of time to the opposition for getting familiar with the letter, together with the public opinion. Then we will continue the meetings of the commission for the four vacancies at AMA”, Peza declared.

Albania was among the first countries in Europe that included the digital broadcast. Now we might be the last one that completes the digitalization process, which must end on June 17th 2015.

If this deadline will not be respected by Albania, the Albanian consumers might ot have anymore digital service from June 18th of the next year.
