Urban transportation price increase

The Parliament Members of the majority support the passing of
competences for setting the bus ticket price from the Council of
Ministers to the Municipal Council.

During the debate for liberalizing the ticket price, transportation associations opposed the price increase once again, since they consider that their businesses are in difficult conditions.

“The growth should be as big as we can, but should keep in mind the conditions of the citizens. We cannot say that we don’t know the requests of the Municipal Council”, declared Ervin Shijaku.

For the opposition Parliament Members, passing the competences from the Council of Ministers to the Municipal Council means transferring the debt burden and the deficit of this sector from the central to the local government.

“We don’t have the necessary mechanisms, especially for the categories in need. Liberalization means that tickets should be 1 EUR for covering the cost. Can Albanian citizens pay this?”, declared Sherefedin Shehu.

The Chairman of the Commission for Productive Activities, Eduard Shalsi, declared that the liberalization of the price should be done with the quality of service that operators will offer.

“The central and local governments will not let it to the market to dictate it”, Shalsi declared.
