The uncontrolled mass constructions in the Durres Bay have destroyed the
coastline of this area. The tourism season is far from expectancies,
due to the close interests and the lack of force of the law.
Although the Prime Minister designate, Edi Rama, declared that there will be a wide operation for demolishing the constructions close to the Durres beaches, the construction is continuing in Kavaja and Golem with a scary pace, going even on the sand and inside the sea.
The entire coastline seems to be swimming in urban chaos, with the illegal constructions outside the criteria and against the law. Local urban architects, part of whom are spending their holidays far from Kavaja and Durres, think that despite the financial and social cost, the beaches can return to identity if there is good will and impartial intervention.
“Keeping in mind that the Durres Municipality has had all the mechanisms, starting from the Urban Directory, the Construction Inspectorate, the Municipal Police to stop the illegal construction, then I have doubts about this”, says urbanist Ardian Muka.
These beaches offer a sad view for every visitor that in this middle season has more heavy vehicles constructing other buildings that go up to the marinas and sea platforms, by even making concrete inside the sea in order to exploit it for private beaches and bars.
“What happened in Durres is an urban massacre in the urban aspect of the beach”, Muka says.
The situation differs in Gjiri i Lalzit and other areas of Kavaja. The builders have received permits for tourist villages, and the damaged road infrastructure has helped for preserving them better.
The cooperation of the government with the local coastline units is considered the key of success for the illegal constructions.
Durres is a city with very important mediterranian sources, since it hides underneath very precious balkan treasures. But although it is a center of tourism, it did not have a special attention for urban development and preservation of the coastline.
