The UN General Secretary in New York said that UNMIK will keep staying in Kosovo, a move opposed by Kosovo.
When asked by Deutsche Welle about the duration of the mission, Stephane Dujarric said that as long as the mandate issued by the Security Council is in power, UNMIK is not leaving the country.
However, Kosovo high-level politicians have asked the mission to close their engagement in the country.
The Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister, Enver Hoxhaj, said this Tuesday in a conference organized in New York, for the 10th anniversary of independence, that UNMIK has practically completed its mission and that it would be better for these troops to be used in other countries of the world, which need them more than Kosovo.
But, according to the Kosovo consul in New York, Teuta Sahatacija, Moscow doesn’t allow any destination change of this peacekeeping mission.
UNMIK has 432 workers in Kosovo, including local staff. Most of them operate in Northern Kosovo, of Serbian majority.
The UNMIK mission in Kosovo comes as part of the UN Resolution 1244, that has given no ending date. The purpose of this mission has changed now that the reality in Kosovo has also changed, but the last decision is up to the Security Council.
