UNESCO takes the Ochrid-Prespa basin under protection

UNESCO takes the Ochrid-Prespa basin under protection. The Minister of
Environment, Lefter Koka, took the certificate for the area that is now a
Biosphere Inter-Border Reserve, after a long process with the most
important actors in the region.

The Minister expressed his appreciation for this special status, and underlined that the Ochrid-Prespa Basin has a special local and global significance. Koka underlined that the protection of natural resources is the main priority of the Albanian government.

His Macedonian counterpart, Nurhan Izairi, declared that the protection of the Ochrid-Presopa protection by UNESCo is a positive signal between the two countries, which will continue in higher levels of cooperation.

The Deputy Prime Minister, niko Peleshi, confirmed that this status would serve not only to the environmental protection, but will also turn into a mutual benefit for both countries.

Present in the inauguration ceremony were the Deputy Prime Minister, Niko Peleshi, the Minister of Environment, Lefter Koka; his counterpart from Macedonia, Nurhan Izairi; representatives of UNESCO and of the Korce and Pogradec Municipalities. The inauguration ceremony also had a fair of artisan and bio-products that promote the values of the southeastern region.
