Official data show that Albania produces thousands of unemployed
university graduates. The Institution of Statistics reported for the
first time that one in three young people who are currently unemployed
have graduated university.
Massive unemployment levels among young ages is an early problem of our economy. The Institution of Statistics says that in the last trimester of 2013, the unemployment level between people from 15 to 29 years of age reached 28.1%. This is more than 11% higher than the average of our economy, and university graduates were also part of this trend.
After 2004, Albania undertook an aggressive policy for liberalizing universities. As result, the number of private and public universities increased from 50.000 to 160.000. While the number of unemployed graduates has increased with three times, the economy has not produced jobs with the same pace, leaving many of them outside the market, unable to recover their investment and in financial difficulties.
Unemployment, unlucky year of 2013
2013 marked a dramatic decrease of all employment figures, the strongest in the past two decades. According to the Institution of Statistics, unemployment jumped with 2.6%, reaching 17% in total. This is the highest figure in many years, and almost the entire growth has arrived during the second and third trimester, during the electoral campaign and the power transition period, when economy plunged.
But 2013 is not an isolated case. Data show that unemployment started to incrase since 2012, when the economic growth started dropping. According to the Institution of Statistics, compared to 2012, unemployment rallied with 3.6% while unemployment for the youngest part of the population dropped from 52 to 42.6%.
