The Albanian Foreign Minister made public to Greece the request for removing the law of war that their country has for Albania.
Ditmir Bushati articulated this request during the first visit with the Greek Homologue, Evangelos Venizellos.
“We believe that the reactivation of mechanisms foreseen by the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, followed by the removal of the Law of War of 1940 by Greece, which doesn’t reflect today’s reality of good neighboring, of European path and ancient friendship between the two peoples, would create a new mutual trust environment”, Bushati declared.
However, one could feel some kind of uneasiness from the declarations of both homologues, since their meeting has discussed all the hot topics between the two countries, issues that have been archived through the time without a solution. But both parties kept their respective positions.
Besides the discussion for reactivating state commissions for resolving a series of issues, even the Greek cemeteries in Albania, it seems that there will be difficulties even for others. Venizelos answered to official Tirana about the rule of law, which withhold the problem of Cham properties in Greece, saying that they have not intention to abrogate it.
To the question of Top Channel, why Albania fears removing a law that is dated on 1940, Venizello answered: “First, Greece doesn’t fear anything. There is a decision of the Greek Council of Ministers in 1987 that overpasses the historic obstacles and brings a new tpe of relations with Albania in a time of peace and cooperation. Between two countries that are both NATO members, there is alliance and obligation for protection in case of defense needs. The OSCE, where both our countries are members, support the idea of not changing the borders and keeping the friendship relations, the cooperation and stability between all member countries. Whoever thinks that the Greek laws damage their rights, they can address to the International Court of Strasbourg as an individual”.
