The government of Albania is studying the Shkoder bypass, which foresees two variants that could be funded by the EU.

The first variant goes through the Western side of the city, which is 5 kilometres long, with three lanes in each direction.

The total investment cost is 113 million EUR. There are five big bridges, the biggest of which is 612 meters long, on the Drin River.

This variant foresees a tunnel with two tubes. This variant has the lowest cost.

The second one is without a tunnel. It is 10 kilometres long, three lanes in each direction, on the eastern side of the city.

This will cost 143 million EUR and has eight major constructions. The biggest of which is a 770 meters long bridge over Drin.

Both variants are opposed by environmental associations, which say that this will destroy the Shkoder lake and will affect the national park.
