A Chinese group made the first bid for the Spitalla free economic area,
which foresees the building of 140 industrial factories and investments
making 10% of the GDP.
The second offer came from an Italian company, although its details were not made public.
The Commission must select the winner within 30 days from the starting bid. The building of this free economic area is one of the most important projects in the Albanian economy.
The government hopes to attract foreign capital in the national economy through this project, and advance technologically in the economy, and also create new jobs.
Albania has tried several times to build an economic area. The government of 2006 even announced nine projects which were never realized. The new government changed some encouraging tax models, after a study with the Harvard University, but it remains to be seen if the project will work, despite the optimism of the Authorities.
