Two big fires have put in motion the firefighters and local communities
for putting out the flames in Spitalla and Gjiri i Lalzit.
The prolonged drought and the warm weather have helped fires to spread in the forest hills around Durres, while the firefighters’ intervention was difficult due to the inappropriate terrain.
However, the fire has not caused damages in people, and preliminary investigations say that the forest damage is minimal.
Investigators suspect that the fires have been caused by human activity, mainly by carelessness or burned waste materials.
The biggest danger during the hot summer, except natural causes, remains from the accidental fires and those that are lit intentionally by farmers for having more pastures.
Durres district counts more than 8500 hectares of forests and pastures, and the most affected areas are those of Ishm, including the green crowns of Gjiri i Lalzit, Currila, Spitalla, Porto Romano and “Gryka e Minierës” in Kamza.
The problem in the war with the flames remains the difficult terrain of forest hills, which in many cases are impossible for firefighters to pass through.
