Albania might be unique in the world for the fact that the political
parties remain divided on the celebrations for the Liberation Day.
Debates of when Albania was liberated by the German troops remains open for the historians, who support the point of views of the respective parties, mostly based on the testimonies of the people who fought for the country’s liberation.
Those who fought until the last minutes in Shkoder try to give facts about the midnight between 28 and 29 November 2011. One of them is the 85 year old Bajram Rizai, partisan of the battalion “Perlat Rexhepi”, which was part of the last battles that took place in Shkoder.
“We entered the Post Telegraph premises by midnight. In the morning of November 29th, we saw the German rearward troops, and we hit an armored car with about 8 soldiers. It was morning. Three of them died, four others surrendered. This was the last hit on November 29th, when Shkoder was liberated. They can say what they want, but I was present and I have fought from 26 to 29 November”, Rizai declared.
Regardless this and many other testimonies, the date has changed each time that the parties changed government seats. Even the Martyr’s Cemetery has finally found peace, now that one party honors them on November 28th and the other on November 29th.
