Two children have risked their lives in the pit filled with crude oil, in the oil-bearing area of Fier in southern Albania.
The event took place in the village of Zharrëz. The minors were playing while they ended up in the pit of oil well number 489, owned by the state oil company Albpetrol. The children of 5 and 8 years were fortunately rescued by their grandfather, who was working the fields.
A year ago, very close to the pit where two minors risked their lives, a relative of this family lost his life. Despite the constant requests to Albpetrol for the safety insulation of these pits, the situation remains the same.
Leaders of environmental associations have asked the company to fence these holes, as they pose a serious risk to local human life.
Residents say that very close to the houses in the village of Zharrëz there are 12 pits filled with crude oil.
