Although the accession of new countries in the EU was postponed until
2020, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker,
confirmed the European perspective of Western Balkan countries.

Juncker said at the European Council meeting in Brussels: “We helped you before and reconfirmed the clear European perspective to Western Balkan countries. This is the topic that I discussed with the European leaders in this summit”, he said.

The European leaders voted in favor of the Polish former Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, to continue his job as President of the European Council for another 2.5 years. Tusk declared at the European summit that the situation in Balkan is delicate, but the EU remains determined to keep its promises.

“We must see possible ways to reinforce the European security and defense, and respond to the permanent danger of Russian interference in the region”, Tusk said.

Tusk confirmed this discussion was demanded even in previous meetings by European leaders, due to the recent developments in Balkan, such as the situation in Macedonia, or the harsh tones between Kosovo and Serbian authorities.
