Traffickers change cannabis cultivation strategy after government operations

The police operation against cannabis plantations has continued in 11 districts during 2015, destroying 325.000 plants in total.

The police says the operation is successful, because it was carried out in difficult terrains and in plots planted in abandoned areas very far away.

The Deputy Chief of Police, Altin Qato, says that they have verified 291 people in 2014, 496 in 2015. 57 were arrested in 2014 and 183 in 2015. He says the evidence provided will make it easier for the Courts and Prosecution to give the adequate sentences.

A key problem are the plots found in lands without owners, and which have been planted recently, because it is difficult to identify the people involved.

However, Qato says that the Albanian territory is being monitored and there have been 24 flight missions with the Italian forces, identifying more than 1000 cannabis parcels.
