With its thousand-year history, by the Adriatic Sea, near the international airport and the capital, Durrës remains one of the favorite holiday destinations for foreign tourists visiting Albania.
“It’s our first time hereand we came up with the idea that it could be interesting and it’s indeed nice. We came yesterday and still haven’t seen much. We will stay for a few days and then we will return to Stockholm”, said an interviewed tourist.
“It’s so beautiful here. When we got up in the morning, the sun was shining through the windows. We came with our family, the 8 of us, to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of us”, said another vacationer.
Floreta Kërtusha from the Directorate of Tourism, Durrës Municipality, said the number of tourists has been increasing from year to year. “Last year there were more than 1 million tourists and this year we expect a larger number, at least 25% more tourists “, she said.
Built between the 1st and 2nd centuries of our era, the Ancient Amphitheater is the monument that mostly attracts foreign tourists, but it is a multitude of historical sites and beaches that Durrës offers this year.
“When you check online, one of the first attractions for Albania is the Amphitheater in Durrës. Therefore, when we came to Tirana, we thought to visit Durrës and we came here. It is a fantastic historical site”, said a tourist in the center of Durres.
“The most easily accessible is the historical center of the city, but an increased number of visitors are passionate about adventure tourism, those interested in natural paths, hiking and cycling. Increased interest that we also saw from the operators at the Berlin International Fair when agencies made enquieries. That’s why this year we have added tourist guides with motorbikes”, added Kërtusha.
